Proudest  moment in your career?

The recognition that the Manchester Civil Justice Centre has achieved has been very rewarding. It has achieved more than 30 industry awards, both environmental and architectural. It is a fine piece of architecture that bristles with engineering innovation, but without gimmicks. The occupants love it too.

The most important lesson you learnt early in your career?

Listen to people and find out how you can help them. Your effort will be repaid a hundred times over.

Your most challenging project? And why?

There have been a few! Crown Casino in Melbourne was challenging for its sheer size and space - 550,000m2 of fully fitted out building design to be delivered in four years!

An essential key to innovative thinking? And why?

It is essential to free yourself from pre-conception and fashion. It is also important to involve other designers in the task, ideally those with a different background to you. A cooperative team will produce a better design than a brilliant individual every time.

Enjoyment is...

Time alone outdoors, maybe on a bike or in the sea. Cooking and eating great food with friends and family. Talking to my children.
